The difference in purpose

An AI companion puts the conversation at the center of the experience. An AI assistant is a starting point when you want a result outside the conversation, such as a draft or summary. These are useful distinctions of purpose, not two categories with a hard boundary.
Replika’s help center distinguishes its conversational purpose from traditional assistant tasks. Claude’s help center lists writing and summarization among its uses. These are the companies’ descriptions of their own products, not results from our comparative testing. Replika’s explanation · Claude’s listed uses
The first question is what would count as success for you. Would you be satisfied by an enjoyable exchange, or do you need something you can use afterward? For the category definition, see The broader AI companion category.
Compare by the task you want to do

Use the result you need to narrow your search. This table is an editorial decision aid, not a product ranking or a report of tested performance. The situations are illustrative.
| Your task | Result you want | Where to start | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talk about a fictional character’s day | An exchange you want to continue | A companion or character-chat format | Does the tone and role suit the conversation you want? |
| Turn rough notes into an email | A draft you can edit and send | An assistant with writing support | Does the draft preserve your meaning and avoid adding details? |
| Condense a document | A summary grounded in the original | An assistant that accepts the relevant input | Compare important points with the document; do not assume a fluent summary is complete. |
| Put an appointment on a calendar | An event actually saved in the right calendar | A service with a documented calendar capability | Confirm the event in the calendar itself. Talking about the appointment is not confirmation that it was created. |
The last row involves an external action. A friendly conversation and even a correctly written event description do not establish that anything was saved. The tool, permission, and resulting record all matter; this table does not claim that any named service provides that connection.
Where ordinary chatbots fit

In this guide, “chatbot” describes a system you interact with through conversation. It does not tell you whether the system is intended for character dialogue, customer support, or work tasks.
Two services can both present a message box while supporting different inputs and actions. Look for a documented capability that matches your task rather than treating the chat interface as a specification.
For an external action, verify the resulting record in the destination service, as in the calendar example above.
Where the categories overlap

The categories overlap. Claude’s listed uses include brainstorming and conversation as well as writing tasks, so conversational ability alone does not identify a companion. Claude’s listed uses
Check which functions are available to your account; a category label does not establish tool access.
You can also separate two needs. A fictional exchange and a document summary do not have to use the same service. Choose the standard of success for each instead of trying to find one label that covers everything.
Choose a category, then a service

Write down the result you want in one sentence. Then check whether a particular service supports the necessary input, output, and actions under conditions you accept.
If the conversation itself is your aim, continue with How to choose a companion service. Choosing a category is only the starting point; it does not establish the suitability, cost, or privacy of a particular product.
